I'm Gonna Catch You (Cuttin' Out On Me) - Curtis Carrington
http://youtu.be/hV-dpu5OZ5g
Driving raver that has been heavily repro'd in recent years.Originally
released on Bobby Robinson's Fury label in 1958 the very,VERY
religious pianist/singer Mr Carrington was apparently never at ease
with the Devil's music---and after one more release for Gee (which I
never heard) he then recorded only gospel and other sacred music
mostly for his own Ken-Yatta label (the label was named after his son
apparently? WTF????). Anyway he never ventured near rock 'n' roll
again

Hear My Plea Baby - Arthur Gunter

"Arthur Gunter sings an authentic down home middle beat blues that
will appeal mostly to the southern markets. It is a strong job of blues
wailing and deserves your close attention"
(Cash Box review of Excello 2084 21 July 1956)

Great Jumpin' Catfish - Wanderers
http://youtu.be/uslSf7mUjfY
With Ray Pollard lead this was actually released as the "B" side of
their 1957 "Thinking Of You" on Onyx which was a revival of the old
Kalman-Ruby standard that I never liked much by anybody. No surprise
then that "Catfish" is much the better side IMO

Gas Happy Mama - The Royals
http://youtu.be/Ldhsu5H44Gg
Not to be confused with the Midnighters nee Royals these were an even
earlier group that are famous for backing Chuck Willis on a few of his
Okeh releases. These guys were pacted to that label too and the
storming "Gas Happy Mama" was recorded by them in June 1952 but sadly
sat in the vaults unissued. Most online sources vary in their dates
that it finally surfaced with some even citing the recent "Jazzman"
release in their "Juke Box Jam" series here in the UK. It actually
first saw light of day in 1993 on the excellenrt "The Okeh Rhythm &
Blues Story" set in 1993.

Switching from The Royals to the Royales here they are with their
pretty good flip of a 1960 King release "I'm With You"-- a number that
did feature in that years Battle.

Much, much better group than yesterday's. The Carrington really grabbed
me. Now that's what I call rock'n'roll.

Steve's AG wins the group with Jim's Royals and my 5 Royales close behind. Roger's CC takes 4th and will likely advance with 25 points. And bringing up the rear and eliminated is the Wanderers record. Welcome back, Billy!

Ray Pollard was in the Hall Of Fame UGHA show we attended as a group. I think he sang "Thinking Of You." An interesting tidbit, he went on to sing with the Joe Cuba Sextet. Don't know if he was on "Bang Bang." Apparently, he was also in The Jimmy Castor Bunch, which had the original "I Promise To Remember."

The Jimmy Castor bunch did do a version of "I Promise To Remember," but that was in 1972. It certainly was not the original. That was by Jimmy Castor and the Juniors in 1956.

Yes, "Catfish" has a white structure and sounds like a white record to me.
Catfish is pleasant enough, but my perjorative focus was on the Gunter
record. "Most whites", I reckon (admittedly I have not taken a
clipboard and asked a thousand randomly chosen whites in, say, Florida
:-), would not like the Gunter record "Hear My Plea" - Arthur does
have some better sounding records for "most whites", such as: "My
Heart Is Always Lonesome", "Baby Can't You See", "Honey Babe"...

I've mentioned recently that this electorate (of mostly whites) leans
towards records with an earthy r&b sound/atmosphere. And I've
mentioned a possible (I'm not sure) 'halo effect' on voting -
gee gosh its archetypal earthy r&b mega star Arthur Gunter, I must
stay loyal to the program, and vote accordingly.
Very impressive, if simple, percussion, but Arthur's vocal exudes a
'depressingly flat' atmosphere on this particular record. Shades of
this 'depression' can even be sensed in "Baby Let's Play House" on
Excello.
