From 1951 and now recording for the Coral label Goree Carter comes
through with a good little rocker here adding to his tally of records
that belong on your shelves that start with the real classic "Rock
Awhile" from 1949 that Chuck Berry must have been familiar with and

Broken Hearted Baby - The Five Notes
http://youtu.be/JOMXhfVIa5g
From 1955 originally on the tiny Philly based Jen D then picked up by
Josie. These guys from the Philly area too of course and are not to
be confused with The Five Notes from the Dallas region who were on
Chess ("Park Your Love") and who later morphed into the very same Five
Stars who are also represented elsewhere in this March contest with
Diane's very welcome "So Lonely Baby" nomination

Incidentally after a long hiatus the Jen D label seems to have been
bought back from the dead momentarily in 1963 when one Alan Lee (an
extremely poor man's Elvis) did a rocked up version of this same
"Broken Hearted Baby" (b/w the same "You Are So Beautiful" song that
flipped this Five Notes release)

I'll Be the One - Equadors
http://youtu.be/5_c1455aTYw
Not to be confused with the Motown Equadors in last month's tournament
these are a bunch of Philly Equadors who recorded for RCA. Problem
was, that any chance this 1958 track ever had for sales was stalled
when RCA marketed it on an EP which had the effect of reducing airplay
to virtually nil.Exactly the same crazy marketing ploy by RCA a year
earlier almost certainly cost the Twin-Tones a chart hit with their
original "Jo Ann" handing the hit placing on a silver plate to the
Playmates cover.

The group later recorded as The Modern Ink Spots and later still as
The Cardinals (!) who did a fair version of "Why Don't You Write Me"
in 193 (b/w a...um...different ...version of "Sh-Boom")

Loud Mouth Annie - Myles & Dupont

"Myles" is Edgar "Big Boy" of that ilk, member of the legendary
Sha-Weez group whilst "Dupont" is August "Dimes" Dupont of The
Gondoliers. Recorded circa June 1958 in New Orleans the song was
written by Dupont and Edgar's bro Warren Myles. The number graces
several Chess compilations perhaps best on the wonderful MCA "Chess
New Orleans" 2-CD set in 1995

BTW That's Robert "Barefootin" Parker's sax on the session

Hey Little Girl - Frankie Lee Sims
http://youtu.be/20rCpH0-Nuk
Recorded in Dallas (?) 1957 I show the lineup on this fine blues as
Sims (vcl gtr),Jack White (ten),Willie Taylor (pno) Ralph Morgan (bs)
and Jimmy Mullins (dms).

That's the same mild mannered Jimmy Mullins who just won the February
tournament on here with "Rock And Roll Baby" after changing into his
"Mercy Baby" superhero identity. This was the flipside to "Walking
With Frankie" on Ace which did make the 1957 Singles Battle. And both
sides appear on the super-scarce Teem LP "The Kings Sing The Blues" in
1964 of which there were absolutely NO copies in the Ace warehouse in
Mississippi!

Didn't know "Rock Awhile", and now I'm glad I do. Chuck had great taste
in the intros he stole.

I guess this is what you'd call a factoid, but I feel obligated to
mention that "Jimmy's" real name was Julius.

FINAL RANKINGS

1. Hey Little Girl - Frankie Lee Sims - 36
2. Loud Mouth Annie - Myles & Dupont - 29
3. I'm Your Boogie Man - Goree Carter - 27
4. Broken Hearted Baby - The Five Notes - 24

5. I'll Be the One - Equadors - 19

Jim's Blues rocker takes the group handily. Diane's duet and Jim's early rocker are next, followed by Carl's roikcin' vocal group record with a killer extra long sax break. Rick's Equadors does not fare as well as last month's namesake.

That was *Roger's* blues rocker that won the group. And "roikcin' " is
not a word. Did you get a medical marijuana boogie card or something?

Clearly, most voters did not listen to the last part of the Equadors record,
which sets it apart from all the rest..

At least we agree that the Equadors record is definitely set apart from the rest.
