20 FAVE DUET RECORDS

TODAY........FROM 1952

1. DREAM GIRL – JESSE & MARVIN

Jesse Belvin & Marvin Phillips here on this classic for Specialty. Huge
#2 Billboard r&b hit

2. I’M GONE – SHIRLEY & LEE

Great debut of Shirley (Goodman) and Leonard (Lee) on Aladdin backed up
by the Dave Bartholomew Band

3. SATURDAY NIGHT DADDY – LITTLE ESTHER & BOBBY NUNN

Cool bluesy duet from Esther & Bobby on Federal penned by Messrs Leiber
& Stoller. What’s not to like?

4. HI-HO BABY – JACKIE BRENSTON & EDNA McRANEY

Probably recorded at 706 Union Av Memphis in December 1951 & tapes sent
to Chess but AFAIK this has never been proven

5. DADDY LOVES BABY – JESSE & MARVIN

The excellent flipside to the #1 record listed above by Jesse & Marvin
on Specialty

6. YES INDEED! – MOMS MABLEY & SONNY TIL (& THE ORIOLES) (unreleased)

Splendid revival of the old Bing Crosby/Connee Boswell hit number
recorded for Jubilee but (amazingly) not issued at the time

7.SWEETHEARTS – SHIRLEY & LEE

Here’s the decent flipside to the #2 entry above by Shirley & Lee on
Aladdin again with Dave Bartholomew backing

8. PAYDAY LOVER – VIVIAN VERSON & JIMMY SMITH

Backed by Red Calhoun’s band here’s Vivian Verson & Jimmy Smith on a
punchy duet on J-B label

9. LOOKIN’ FOR MY BABY – BONNIE & IKE TURNER

Duet for RPM by Ike with his then-pianist Marion Louis Lee (alias
“Bonnie Turner”) who he married later in 1952

10. MONDAY MORNING BLUES – LIL GREENWOOD & LITTLE WILLIE

Backed up by The Four Jacks here’s Lil Greenwood and Little Willie
Littlefield doing their togetherness thing on Federal

11. BACK UP – EDDIE JOHNSON & EDNA McRANEY

Rockin’ duet between Eddie & Edna recorded for and released by Chess in
mid-1952

12. MY HEART BELONGS TO YOU – BONNIE & IKE TURNER

The flipside on the RPM record above (# 9) that revives Arbee Stidham’s
1947 “My Heart Belongs To You”

13. LAST LAUGH BLUES - LITTLE ESTHER & LITTLE WILLIE

Esther teams with Little Willie Littlefield on this Federal recording of
another very early Leiber & Stoller number

14. LET’S TALK IT OVER BABY – JIMMY LEE & ARTIS

Alias Jimmy Lee Cheatham and Artis Brewster these were a hubby/wife team
from Texarkana recording for Modern

15. THE LOVE BUG BOOGIE – JOHNNY OTIS ORCHESTRA (VCL MEL WALKER/ADA
WILSON)

Some dispute over the release date on Otis’ adios to Mercury here. I
have it (by catalog #) as late December 1952

16. TORTURED LOVE – H-BOMB FERGUSON WITH VARETTA DILLARD

Grandpa Herman has a weird idea of a bona fide “duet” here but Varetta
IS present here and CAN be heard so………..

17. SLOW POISON – JOHNNIE & JACK

The prominent country duo with one of their RCA hits and one I always
kinda liked

18. REALLY REAL – VIOLA WATKINS & OTIS BLACKWELL

Decent enough duet on Jubilee from the pair---think this is Blackwell’s
first appearance on wax

19. DON’T LET THE STARS GET IN YOUR EYES – JOHNNIE & JACK

Mild country hit for the duo here on Slim Willet’s original tho Como is
about to swamp everyone with his massive #1 pop hit version

20. MY HEART’S DESIRE – JIMMIE LEE & ARTIS

The hubby & wife duo (from #14 above) do a reasonable job for Modern
here in ripping off “I Almost Lost My Mind”

BUBBLING UNDER

21. DIM LIGHTS THICK SMOKE AND LOUD,LOUD MUSIC – LESTER FLATT & EARL
SCRUGGS
22. ONCE IN A WHILE – EDNA McGRIFF & SONNY TIL (THE ORIOLES)
23. I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU – EDNA McGRIFF & SONNY TIL (THE ORIOLES)
24. I’M HOG TIED OVER YOU – ELLA MAE MORSE & TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD
25. A FULL TIME JOB – DORIS DAY & JOHNNIE RAY

231 ¦ Gabbin' Blues ¦ Big Maybelle
The most important omission on my list. Splendid duet between Maybelle
and Rose Marie McCoy.

Going by my 1952 faves list this should rate #5 on my duets list

Apologies Maybelle babe!

That reminds me, we both missed this in 1959.

And don't forget this one when you do 1953.

Jesse Belvin & Marvin Phillips here on this classic for Specialty. Huge
#2 Billboard r&b hit
And also it's Earl Lewis' all time favorite record. I asked him at a
UGHA meeting and this was his answer.

http://youtu.be/kzI2h-Hv1nE
Splendid revival of the old Bing Crosby/Connee Boswell hit number

I had this on my vocal group list.

I gotta say, several of these male-female duets you listed are not very
good. I don't even file them.

11. BACK UP – EDDIE JOHNSON & EDNA McRANEY
http://youtu.be/b_94r76IfCo
WHY on Earth would you post this shitty sounding video from a 78 when
this awesome sounding one is available?

Maybe because of your record collectoritis as you can see the Chess 78
playing?

20. MY HEART’S DESIRE – JIMMIE LEE & ARTIS
http://youtu.be/k8l59QV9-tA
I did file this because it was a hit, but it's only a 4 for me.

Not too many duets in 1952 so had to make the occasional stretch :)

Please remember that not all YT clips are viewable in all locations (and
no I don't know why either. If its the usual copyright bullshit then it
just doesn't appear at all in the affected area. But sometimes a given
clip doesn't show up in another location .

It happens the other way too. Not often but occasionally from this side
of the pond I see a better clip than you mention in your Cash Box
posts---but I figure its just not showing there

It's my experience, as limited as it may or may not be, that there's
a significantly larger collection of 1946-1964 clips (ie artist-songs)
available on your UK YT than on US YT - which is one good reason
for setting up a VPN (which comes free with some anti-virus software
such as Norton's, although I use a US-based stand-alone VPN).

It's also true that a few specific YT posts are available in a
location but for some reason are nevertheless tricky/difficult to
search for within that location.
