(too old to reply)

Here's the provisional list of entries for the 1956 BATTLE OF THE
SINGLES contest.

As will seen straight off I've pondered the question of whether the
contest should be individual songs v .individual songs or double sided
singles v. double sided singles.

After finishing the list (so far) I've come down on the side of
individual songs (that were all released in 1956 on 45RPM singles) .

We are still not up to the magic 512 figure so the time is now right
for eveyone who wants to take part to nominate some of their 1956
favorites that are not listed here (in accordance with the suggestion
Bill made) .

I'll accept up to SIX NOMINATED FAVORITES per person. The only proviso
is that they must have been 45RPM singles in the year (no LP only
tracks please!). They can be the "A" side or "B" side (or both! :)

Also I'm obviously open to omissions---any famous or otherwise
significant records (of any genre) that you think should be here but
which have been overlooked or missed for whatever reason. Also any
flipsides of the records listed that you think ought to be here.

Also welcomed are details of any other errors etc you may find---so
the final list can be corrected.

As well as posting your nominations here PLEASE ALSO MAIL DETAILS TO
ME so they are definitely added---THANKS!

I count 402 songs listed below (I ran out of fingers and toes!) so one
way or another we need 110 more.

I'll give it a few days for people to nominate their choices & send in
additions etc then we'll see what the figure is then.

REMEMBER PLEASE!! THE FINAL LIST *HAS* TO BE 512 ENTRIES!!!

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO INCLUDE EVERYTHING!!!

If I *still* need additions after the nominations/additions etc are
all in I'll balance the figure up to 512 by including a few more of
the more minor hit records of the year unless anyone has a better idea

Ok here's what I have (I've tried to include the major pop hits, the
most famous R&B and C&W songs plus some of the more significant
records of the year---and even a couple of gospel entries!----plus
those records that have been mentioned and discussed recently on
here) :-

There might wind up being several instances of this but here's one
where I'd like to see the b-side added to the contest.

roger,
this task you are undertaking is awesome. i don't know where you find
the time.

i have a suggestion which will probably not sit well with some folks,
including you.

wouldn't it make your task somewhat easier if you didn't include the
record label and number after each song?

i am thinking of your time restraints and this would streamline it to a
fair degree.

It would be harder Frank since I'd have to physically type each entry
out

Here's the provisional list of entries for the 1956 BATTLE OF THE
SINGLES contest.
Okay, first off I must voice my displeasure at some decisions you seem
to have made here.

1 - If it's a strict battle of just songs rather than of two sided
singles, what difference does it make if a song appeared on a single
or not? You, me, and Dean all have LP tracks on our own yearly lists,
why would they be excluded here? It's not even like there would be
very many that were significant, but certainly a couple of LP tracks
by Presley, Gene Vincent, Burnette Trio, and a few other artists could
fare well here if included. I don't see why they should not be
included merely because some record company only released tham on LPs
and EPs rather than on a traditional two sided single. I think it
would be ludicrous, for instance, in 1957, to not include "Baby, I
Don't Care" by Elvis merely because it was not on a traditional
single.

2 - I also don't agree with the "6 per person" number on the
nominations. Letting people nominate any crazy record is not good for
the overall contest. You would get many more songs that would stand a
chance of faring well if you did not place a maximum number on the
nominations allowed by each person, and instead required that the
nomination be seconded before the song would be included. We don't
need some oddball Pearls record included that nobody but Bugge would
care about, but if you keep it at 6 nominations per person, all of
which would be included, you will be leaving out some significant
records that might fare well here, in favor of some oddball personal
favorites that only the nominator would care about.

It's gonna take some time for me to go through what you have listed
and to put my list of nominations together, but the first thing I see
is that "April In Paris" by Basie is not from 1956, it's from 1955.
It entered the BB pop chart already for the week ending 12-28-55.

Also, "Blue Suede Shoes" by Boyd Bennett does not belong on this list.
It was not a real big hit, and it's not very good. I'm gald you have
"Hit That Jive Jack" on there, but they have two or three other good
records from 1956 that could be added.

I'll be back after I scan the list.

What happened to "After The Lights Go Down Low" by Al Hibbler?

Certainly that is much more significant than "Blue Suede Shoes" by
Boyd Bennett.

"Jivin' Around" by Ernie Freeman is from 1955. So is "Dreams Of
Conetnetment" by the Dells, it got reviewed very late, check the

Why You Do Me like You Do - Cleftones (Huge doo wop)

Can't agree here. This was the #2 best selling version of "Blue Suede
Shoes" on a single after the Perkins hit (the Presley version was not
released on single until much later in the year)

Think you're wrong on this being from 1956
It was always assumed to be from 1955, but a copy was found in a
Pennsylvania radio station in the 1980s or 1990s, and it had a date of
9-56 stamped on it.

This would have finished real high on the Relic survey for 1956, but
unfortunately, we never included it. It's coming back to me now,
here's what happened.

Nobnody really had a confirmed year for this record. For years many
collectors assumed it was 1955 as the group had another record that
year on a major label (MGM). They figured the odd label record must
have come before the major label release. At some point someone turned
up some info on the label which seemed to point towards a later
release. Some collectors were now saying that it was actually from
1957, still unconfirmed though. We did not list it in the 1955 survey
or the 1956 survey, which was done in 1996. We were leaning towards
listing it in 1957, when a few months after we had done the 1996
survey (fall of 1996 now), we learned of the radio station discovery
where the record was stamped as being from September or October of
1956 (can't remember for sure, I know it was one of those two months).

A lot more significant than "Rock And Roll Ruby" by Johnny Carroll.
Both records were heard all the time on NYC radio, and I think "Rock

I have both versions somewhere. IIRC that dreadful British accent
(that is topped only by that most appalling London (cockney) accent
adopted by Dick Van Dyke in "Mary Poppins") is not quite so evident on
the 1955 recording tho it is there.

And there is the biggest beauty of these kind of contests.

I'm listening to 1956 favorites in the car to prepare for the voting.

Another strong LP track from 1956 is "Come Back My Lover" by the
Heartbreakers (Paul Himmelstein).

When you settle in on what you have added and subtracted from the
original list you posted, can you post the updated list?

I'd like to see where we're at and whether there's any room for
additional oddball nominations. I have a feeling that if you want to
keep it at a max of 512 that there will in no way be room for each
member to start nominating 6 more odd things apiece.

You're better off making a decision on each item suggested, and then
MAYBE allowing each member here to add one oddball favorite to get us
to 512, if there's room.

I still say that Boyd Bennett's awful "Blue Suede Shoes" is a waste of
a spot, and we don't need both versions of "Ooby Dooby" on there. The
flip of the Jew-el release is really not needed either. Those records
are no more significant than releases that we are not using by people
like Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Carl Perkins, Fats Domino, Chuck
Berry, etc...You can't tell me that "Trying To Get To You" by the Teen
Kings is more significant than "What's The Reason I'm Not Pleasing
You." I don't have a problem with that one Fats song being out, but it
was a bigger hit than Bennett's "Blue Suede Shoes," and it was an
original song that no other artist did that year. The bennett record
did not even crack the top 60 on the pop chart. "What's The Reason"
was bigger, better, and done by an artist who is much more respected
around here than Boyd Bennett. I can live with "What's The Reason"
being out, but not if Bennett's "BSS" is in. Two real strong versions
of "Blue Suede Shoes" is enough. The Bennett version has no shot of
winning in virtually any matchup it would get.

I think the Fats record belongs in either way. It was played on the

Roger also originally omitted "Don't Blame It On Me." Hopefully it was

better (IMO) than the bigger hit, "Bo Weevil" on the flip.

Your original list did not include several songs that made my Top 100 of
1956 list (based on the combined Billboard and Cash Box charts). I know a
few of these have been mentioned since then; you might want to include the
others based on their chart performance (if not their lasting signficance):

Tony Bennett - Can You Find It In Your Heart - Columbia
Teresa Brewer - Bo Weevil - Coral
Lonnie Donegan & His Skiffle Group - Rock Island Line - London
Eddie Heywood - Soft Summer Breeze - Mercury
Al Hibbler - After The Lights Go Down Low - Decca
Dick Jacobs & His Orchestra - Petticoats Of Portugal - Coral
Richard Maltby & His Orchestra - Themes From "The Man With The Golden Arm" -

Vince Martin with The Tarriers - Cindy, Oh Cindy - Glory
The McGuire Sisters - Picnic - Coral
Don Rondo - Two Different Worlds - Jubilee

Most album cuts there were NOT released on a 45 are obscure dreck.

I did a quick count and it looks like Roger has both the a and b side
listed for about 75 records. I wish he'd reconsider and list both
sides together, as discussed earlier. I still don't think there will
be much of a problem getting the list up to 512 records. Even if
there is, it's not that big a deal.

I like having the songs listed separately better, as long as the song
list is at a managable size. I just fail to see why a "song list"
should be limited to just "songs" that were on singles.

Here are some LP tracks the should be in the contest IMO.

Paralyzed - Elvis
When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again - Elvis
So Glad You're Mine - Elvis
Love Me - Elvis (HUGE top ten chart hit on an EP)
All By Myself - Johnny Burnette Trio
Rock Billy Boogie - Johnny Burnette Trio
Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee - Johnny Burnette Trio
Sweet Love On My Mind - Johnny Burnette Trio
Your Baby Blue Eyes - Johnny Burnette Trio
I Flipped - Gene Vincent
Jump Back, Honey, Jump Back - Gene Vincent
Jump Down, Spin Around - Harry Belafonte

Especially in the case of "Love Me" it seems crazy not to include it
here. It was a top ten pop chart hit and everybody who was around then
knew the song very well from hearing it on the radio at the time. Why
should it matter in a "songs" contest if the "song" was issued on a
standard two-sided single or not?

In the case of a couple of the Burnette things they were eventually
issued on singles after 1956, so if Roger sticks to that "single only"
rule, I guess they can be included later on in another year.

1 - If it's a strict battle of just songs rather than of two sided
singles, what difference does it make if a song appeared on a single
or not?
Where do you find all this crap?

It's NOT a songs contest!!

Its a vote on here to find the #1 single released in 1956 in the
collective opinion of this group.

Therefore calbum-only tracks----even a million seller like "Love Me"

There's nowhere near enough good album tracks in 1956 to include them
in a separate contest. One of the greatest records of the year will
not be there with these rules - "I've Got You Under My Skin" by
Sinatra. That song could go real far if included (as it should be).

Several of these songs were played at the time just as much as most
songs that happened to be on singles were played. We're only talking
about maybe 15 to 20 significant LP tracks being added - think about
it. "I've Got You Under My Skin" is one of the most famous recordings
of the entire year.

No argument that its one of the most famous recordings of the year and
I like the song fine---it's my favorite Sinatra track. But I just
don't see including non-singles in what was always intended as a
singles only contest.

Even tho it means losing my favorite Sinatra track and also my
favorite Ella number ("Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye")

Todd.there's already more obscure stuff included than I'd have liked.

Listing both sides together would mean an extra 75 obscurities as
you've already noted yourself.

I think it
would be ludicrous, for instance, in 1957, to not include "Baby, I
Don't Care" by Elvis merely because it was not on a traditional
single.
Because it's gonna be a Battle of the SINGLES as I first mooted.

Later on,assuming any of us live to see the end of this contest, all
the tracks you mention can fight it out in some kind of "Battle Of The
Album Tracks".

But for right now let's concentrate on singles huh?
Post by Paulie Peanuts
The idea WAS seconded (Bill proposed and Mark seconded). I first
suggested ten entries per person but settled on six when I saw the
length of the list thats just been put up here.

If someone nominates little known obscure records that's up to them.
They must be aware that the chance of their nominations making it very
far in the contest will be slim once they come up against well known
items. Of course if the contestants post their mp3s as has been mooted
then that may change things.
Post by Paulie Peanuts
It's gonna take some time for me to go through what you have listed
and to put my list of nominations together, but the first thing I see
is that "April In Paris" by Basie is not from 1956, it's from 1955.
It entered the BB pop chart already for the week ending 12-28-55.
That's the token jazz record gone :)

I'm for whatever maximizes interest and pleasure, and minimizes Roger's
labors. I thought the seconding idea worked well in the 70s group, but
since it appears there won't be a big flood of weird nominations here,
and since Roger is clearly open to adding suggestions like yours and
Bill's independent of "nominations," then we don't need to be overly
formal about it.

You are full of fucking bullshit. Allowing MORE than 6 nominations allows ghetto dreck fanatics, such as
yourself, to increase their crap's chances of success.

for eveyone who wants to take part to nominate some of their 1956
favorites that are not listed here (in accordance with the suggestion
Bill made) .
I'll accept up to SIX NOMINATED FAVORITES per person.
The only problem is I don't have a database showing the years. Some quick
reaearch turned up these, which will be my nominations:

Pearls- Zippity Zippity Zoom
Avons- Our Love Will Never End
Jacks- How Soon
G-Clefs- Caise You're Mine
Turbans- It Was A Nite Like This
Four Fellows- I Sit In My Window

I'm sure many more would come before these if I had the database, but I
don't.

A suggestion- nominated songs that are listed should have MP3s posted by the
nominators where possible. I can provide all but "I Sit In My Window."

Here are my six noms.

Roberta Sherwood - Lazy River
B.B. King - Sweet Little Angel
Ray Charles - What Would I Do Without You
Five Satins - Wonderful Girl
Crowns (Arthur Lee Maye) - Gloria
Big Maybelle - Candy

If for any reason, these are not eligible (wrong year, not a single, etc),
The following in order are replacements

Peggy Lee - Joey, Joey, Joey
Chuck Willis - Juanita

Also, thanks for doing this.

I would like to voice my concern regarding Peanuts.

He has listed many more than six, and has promised more to come.

It seems to me you have a decision to make.

Either let Peanuts fill up the rest of the list, or simply take his first
six, and let the rest of us play too.

After all, Im sure Dean could offer up many more, as could Sharx, as could
Scarlotti, as could Frank, as could I, as could you.

Theres lots of different kinds of music lovers here, and I feel you have a
fairly representative list, without adding dozens more
from Peanuts, who truly is not representative of
the music tastes in this group, no matter how
loudly he claims to be.

Assuming everyones two cents is worth the same, this is my two cents worth.

I have not nominated anything yet, Rocky. I'm just listing things that
I think Roger may have inadvertedly missed on his list. Obviously he
would include "Candy" and "Marriane" and others on the basic list
without anybody having to nominate them. In fact, I litsed four of the
six things you nominated already. You shouldn;t have to waste a
nomination on huge records like "Candy" and "Sweet Little Angel" and
"Wonderful Girl."

Sharx doesn't count for anything here. Roger's not gonna take his
nominations or count his votes.

For that reason alone, when the contest moderator selects WHOSE votes or nominations they will accept,
this contest is NULL AND VOID.

I withdraw my noms until the list is settled.

Please hold off nominating stuff for a day or two till the additions
have all been made. Some of these will get added anyway.

I'm obviously open to omissions---any famous or otherwise
significant records (of any genre) that you think should be here but
which have been overlooked or missed for whatever reason.
How about:

Joe Turner - The Chicken And the Hawk - Atlantic 1080
Wynonie Harris - Destination Love - Atco 6081

I already suggested this, but Roger should consider this a second and
include it.

Bruce suggested this too so I'll consider it seconded :)

L & S must be paying you an awful lot to look after their interests on
here as diligently as you do!!!

Nah, if they paid me enough, I'd do something more useful. ;) (FYI,
there were a handful of other L&S '56 issues that popped up in my
database, but they were too minor to mention; you don't really need
more records that won't survive the first round.)

flipsides of the records listed that you think ought to be here.
I apologize if this was covered elsewhere, but are you using recording date,
chart debut, or chart peak for qualification? Louis Armstrong's great
version of "Mack the Knife" was recorded and (I believe) debuted in 1955,
but peaked in 1956.
