* First off, this is the worst four tunes I've ever heard bunched together in these contests!!

1- "Every Time We Say Goodbye" By dint of Ella's vocal alone does this soporific composition rises above the melodic quagmire, baby!!

2- "It's Funny but it's True" - Starts with goofy honking sax and then continues and with a noxious singer who resides goofily in the upper register for no reason and to no end!!

3- "Let's Party Awhile" Ordinary and dull.

4- "Teasin' Heart"- Don't ever play this record again!!

To me, the singing is anything but noxious. You either have the R&B
gene or you don't.

The next two have "B-side" written all over them. Since "My Heart's
Desire" is a huge favorite of mine, the Wheels record is a particular
disappointment.

Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye - Ella Fitzgerald - 8
One of my all time favorite readings of a standard, this was a
highlight of the Ella's wonderful 1956 Cole Porter edition of her
famous "Songbook" series.

I don't think Billie ever did this song but Ella certainly blows away
all the other versions I know of it---and that includes Sarah Vaughan
and Dinah Washington.

Over here it became a single on HMV (never issued that way in USA) b/w
her classic reading of Rodgers & Hart's "Manhattan" and still one of
my all time favorite double-sided singles!

Let's Party Awhile - Bel-Aires - 7
Flip of their "This Paradise" on the West Coast Flip label (which WAS
in the 1954 Battle). Lead here is Donald Woods. Group went on to
release the excellent "White Port And Lemon Juice" before changing
their name to "Donald Woods & The Vel-Aires" and issuing their most
famous record "My Baby's Gone" (better known as "Death Of An Angel")
later that year (and of course its "The Man From Utopia" flipside that
was a popular entry back in the April edition of this contest)

It's Funny, But It's True - Avalons - 6
I really like their "Chains Around My Heart" release on Groove to
which this decent number was the followup. Group hailed from Newport
News Va. Not to be confused with the West Coast Avalons group on
Aladdin that had the unreleased gem "I Miss You"
Post by Roger Ford
Teasin' Heart - Wheels - 5
On the Linden NJ Premium label this was the very inferior followup to
their classic "My Heart's Desire" (that was backed by the also
excellent "Let's Have A Ball" )

I don't know about you but the first time I ever encountered The
Avalons was with the "other" group---the different California one that
recorded "I Miss You" and "Love Me" for Aladdin that both went
criminally unreleased and first appeared on the late 60's "Sweet And
Greasy" Steve LaVere compilation set on Imperial (Liberty over here)
that I bought when new.

I had to wait until the early 70's to make the acquaintance of THESE
Groove Avalons when I first heard them at Val's place

I like "Love Me." The other one is just okay because of the annoying organ.

I think it's not right that it gets measured against one of my all-time favorites. On a standalone basis, it's a very good record. The lead vocals, as in "My Heart's Desire," sound unusually sincere to me and the lyrics tell a compelling story. He sings it to his own heart, how he used to play the field without regard to whoever he was with, but now he's the one hopelessly in love.

Huh?

How can you NOT measure each of them against their groups respective
best?

Even if you stand each of them alone surely anyone would say both of
them are good but totally unspectacular to a fault and in no way
unforgettable..

Which is pretty much the same as saying "Teasin' Heart" is not a patch
on the really excellent "My Heart's Desire" and "Caddy Bo" is not in
the same galaxy as the classic "Up On The Mountain"

Easy. This contest is about what comes out of the speakers, not what came out of them. In this particular exercise, each should solely be measured against the other three records in the Group.
Even if you stand each of them alone surely anyone would say both of

No problem with this.

Or on thousands of other records. It just has no bearing here.

They are in the sense that we all rate them 4...3...2...1

However some of us go farther and rate the records a little more
thoroughly---in my case rating them from 10 (AWESOME) to 1 (BEYOND
AWFUL).To reach these more precise gradings (and aid in commenting on
them) inevitably involves a lot more comparisons and ratings against a
LOT more records (including in the manner I described).

I'd imagine that most folks' "10" rated records were already in the
Singles Battles (as mine were) but an odd one may slip through here
eventually.

If so people here will know that the person rating it "10" considers
it one of the very greatest records ever made.
