December 1951 The Top 10 Popular Singles

(3) 1. (IT'S NO) SIN Eddy Howard
(1) 2. COLD,COLD HEART Tony Bennett
(9) 3. JALOUSIE Frankie Laine
(-) 4. CRY Johnnie Ray
(2) 5. BECAUSE OF YOU Tony Bennett
(-) 6. THE LITTLE WHITE CLOUD THAT CRIED Johnnie Ray
(7) 7. UNDECIDED Ames Brothers
(5) 8. (IT'S NO) SIN Four Aces
(-) 9. SHRIMP BOATS Jo Stafford
(-) 10. SLOW POKE Pee Wee King

Not much to choose from here---"Cry" by Johnnie Ray has to come out
tops, the biggest selling double sided hit the record industry had seen
to date (a record it would hold until 1956 and "Hound Dog"/"Don't Be
Cruel" from Elvis)

December 1951 The Top 10 R&B Singles

(1) 1. FOOL,FOOL,FOOL Clovers
(7) 2. I GOT LOADED Peppermint Harris
(4) 3. CHAINS OF LOVE Joe Turner
(-) 4. COLD,COLD HEART Dinah Washington
(9) 5. BECAUSE OF YOU Tab Smith
(3) 6. I'M IN THE MOOD John Lee Hooker
(8) 7. FLAMINGO Earl Bostic
(-) 8. WEEPING AND CRYING Griffin Brothers
(6) 9. SIXTY MINUTE MAN Dominoes

I like nearly all of these but my favorites here have to be The
Clovers and the Dominoes----but I gotta mention one of my all time
fave instrumentals----the great "Flamingo" by Earl Bostic

Nothing can top "Sixty Minute Man," but I have to mention "I Got
Loaded," first because it's a great record, and second because it's one
of the first great records I learned about by reading this group.

Scarlotti: Roger, you're Nuts (with a capital N)! This is one of THE
greatest lineups imaginable!

How can one even begin to choose between three all-time great songs
like CRY, JEALOUSY (JALOUSIE) and COLD, COLD HEART?

Of course you know that I consider CRY to be the first r'n'r song. :D
And backed with another great, THE LITTLE WHITE CLOUD THAT CRIED, it
deserved to be the biggest double-sided hit of its time (I'd take it
hands down over the Elvis record -- and I love the Elvis record too).

JEALOUSY was on the first various artist lp I ever owned, and one of
the greatest tracks on this 3 record set of all-time great tracks.
With its free-style melody, and constantly changing rhythm (and
fluctuating emotions) it was unlike anything I'd ever heard before.
And Laine's performance (one of his greatest of several 100 greats)
absolutely floored me.
(Btw, JEALOUSY was backed by another great song called FLAMENCO which
really should have made it a double-sided champion as well.]

I first heard COLD, COLD HEART by Tony Bennett on a 4 record, various
set not long after I heard JEALOUSY. This one blew me away as well --
and has also remained a favorite for close to 30 years now.

UNDECIDED is a fun Ames Brothers song, and SHRIMP BOATS is an catchy
piece of local color by the versatile Jo Stafford.

The Four Aces version of (ITS NO) SIN is my favorite, and Arthur
Godfreys version of SLOWPOKE destroys Kings (which is good until
you hear Godfreys).

Scarlotti: Cant say I recognize many of these either. I do know a
CHAINS OF LOVE by somebody or other but have never been particularly
fond of it. I listened to a clip from 60 MIN. MAN (60 SEC. MAN?), but
was left unimpressed.
