The latest "Roots Rock Radio" is now archived until January 19th at the
1. RUMBLE, Link Wray
One of the real great 50's instrumentals. Here where it sits on my 1958
instrumentals list

1. Rebel Rouser Duane Eddy
2. Rumble Link Wray
3. Tequila Champs
4. Ramrod Duane Eddy
5. Manhattan Spiritual Reg Owen
6. Guitar Boogie Shuffle Virtues
7. Rock Bottom Little Walter
8. Peter Gunn Henry Mancini
9. Cannon Ball Duane Eddy
10. Rockhouse Ray Charles
Post by Dean
2. DON’T YOU JUST KNOW IT, Huey “Piano” Smith & The Clowns
California covers New Orleans' Huey with a pretty decent version on
Specialty

Post by Dean
3. PUMPIN’ PIANO ROCK, Jerry Lee Lewis
From a session in February 1957 where Jerry lays down both versions of
"It'll Be Me" (the single and the better alternate LP version) plus his
huge "Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On",several takes of "Ole Pal Of
Yesterday",an early try at "You Win Again","Love Letters In The Sand"
and a couple of shots at "Little Green Valley". Backing as usual
features Jimmy Van Eaton and Roland Janes
Post by Dean
5. THREE COOL CATS, The Coasters
Here's a British try at the song that doesn't *quite* come up to
Coasters standard (!) featuring Cliff Richard,Marty Wilde and Dickie
Pride from the TV show "Oh Boy!"

Post by Dean
6. DEACON DAN TUCKER, Jesse Belvin
Not sure who the "real" Dan Tucker was but reminds me of "Go Dan Tucker"
by Little Billy Earl on Goldband that used to sell real well for us back
when

Post by Dean
16. BABY LOVES HIM, Wanda Jackson
Always loved this one. Up there with her very best
Post by Dean
17. NO-GOOD LOVER, Mickey & Sylvia
I liked this one much better than their big "Love Is Strange" hit as
witnessed
by their placings in the "20 Fave Duets - 1956" post from a little while
back
Post by Dean
6. NO GOOD LOVER – MICKEY & SYLVIA

Their first on the Groove label several months before “Love Is Strange”
(I like this one better too 😊)
12. LOVE IS STRANGE – MICKEY & SYLVIA

Mickey Baker & Sylvia Vanderpool on a Bo Diddley penned song that was a
#11 hit BBpop and #1 BBr&b
19. HI-HEEL SNEAKERS, Tommy Tucker
And answered s o effectively here by the recently deceased (and much
missed) Miss Sugar Pie De Santo

Post by Dean
22. RUNAROUND SUE, Dion
Over here Dion scored a #11 hit with this memorable number--but had to
suffer a limp UK cover version from local lad Doug Sheldon that also
charted thus depriving Dion of a much bigger UK hit (maybe rivalling the
#1 he achieved back home)

Post by Dean
23. WITHOUT LOVE (There Is Nothing), Clyde McPhatter
Here's a couple of later versions of this song that I like a lot

From 1964 - Irma Thomas

From 1967 - Oscar Toney Jr

Post by Dean
28. OH! BUT SHE DID, The El Capris
Originally by The Opals in 1954 (The El Capris is from 1956).

Post by Dean
30. THE SHOOP SHOOP SONG (It’s in His Kidd), Betty Everett
Original version by Ms Merry Clayton in 1963 on Capitol as "It's In His
Kiss"

Post by Dean
34. ALL NIGHT LONG, Rusty Bryant
This will feature in my 1953 20 Fave Instrumentals post (coming shortly)
as "Nite Train" as it originally appeared on the Carolyn label
Post by Dean
36. CAN’T HELP LOVING THAT GIRL OF MINE, The Hide-a-Ways
Readers will probably know I'm a sucker for good show tunes with a very
high regard for one of the very best songs from Kern's immortal "Show
Boat"--dubbed in the MGM movie for Ava Gardner's rendition but
unneccessarily IMO since in the much later movie compilation "Thats
Entertainment III" we hear the UNDUBBED version (in Ava's own
voice)---and I for one think the gal does well
Post by Dean
45. A LOVELY WAY TO SPEND AN EVENING, The Angels
Beautiful number introduced by Sinatra in his 1943 movie "Higher And
Higher" and a great version on TV later by Nat "King" Cole too. Plus The
Angels version here ain't too shabby either! :)

Did not know this one. Jerry Lee certainly has more good unissued
recordings from the 50s than anybody.

I never heard this one before. I think it's better than "Motorcycle"!

Also never heard "Pumping Piano Rock" by JLL before. Amazing what they
didn't see fit to release.

I think the Jerry Lee things were out long before the Bear Family boxes.
Lots of Sun and Charly albums contained those things in the 1970s.

I think that "Pumpin' Piano Rock" was first released on this LP from
Japan.

True enough. In certain ways, Charly was Bear Family's predecessor.

The famous quote regarding royalties of Charly Records' bossman in
London Jean-Luc Young :-

"I did all the hard work compiling and manufacturing these albums.

Why the fuck should the artists get anything?"

I'm friends with both San Mencher and Shaun Young, who are well known in
the international rockabilly scene for having been two-thirds of the
trio High Noon.

When Bear Family released its High Noon anthology, Misters Mencher and
Young each received two copies of the CD as royalties. And that was it.

Not so

Pretty sure the first release of "Pumpin' Piano Rock" was on this 1974
UK album
compiled by Messrs Escott & HAwkins for Phonogram
