The Cash Box Looking Ahead charts were that magazine's equivalent to the
Bubbling Under charts in Billboard. Looking Ahead first appeared in the Cash
Box issue dated Oct. 3, 1959, and were as many as 50 positions deep (mostly
during of the '60s). I'm in the process of adding these charts to the Chart
Archives on the cashboxmagazine.com website:
http://50.6.195.142/archives.htm.

Scroll down to the bottom of each weekly chart page for the link to that
week's Looking Ahead chart. Those links are currently available from the
chart's inception through the mid-'70s, with more on the way.

Randy, your post makes me wonder if one of our records b y the Portraits ever made those Looking Ahead charts. Both sides of "Over The Rainbow"/"Runaround Girl" charted in some areas in late '67-early '68. How would you suggest that I might try looking that up?

Gary, a group called the Portraits appeared on the Looking Ahead chart dated
7/29/61 with a song called "Yo-Yo Girl." I'm guessing it's not the same
group, however. (Several versions of "Over The Rainbow" were on that chart,
but not the Portraits' version; no song called "Runaround Girl" showed up on
that chart.)

That's awesome.

You should put in a link so you can go directly to the next week's "Looking Ahead" chart.

Many thx, Randy. Yeah, diff Portraits on that one. I did a story on our band for garagehangover and it acknowledges other recordings by other Portraits, but we took that name (never having heard of any others) around late '66-early '67 when we were signed to Mike Curb.
