THE AVALONS (Unart 2007)

“HEARTS DESIRE” (2:25) [G & H Music BMI—Avalons]
The Avalons, a polished new rock and roll group, make an impressive
showing on Unart with a strong
new teenage, fish-beat romancer that could blossom into chart material.
Commercial fare that deserves
watching.

“EBB TIDE” (2:40) [Robbins ASCAP — Sigman, Maxwell]
A hit of a few years back is brought up to date by the group—singing in
a rock and roll beat.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CASH BOX SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

JESSE LEE TURNER (Carlton 496)

“THE LITTLE SPACE GIRL” (2:54) tLonghorn BMI—Turner]
“SHAKE, BABY, SHAKE” (2:14) [Longhorn BMI—Turner]

“The Little Space Girl” is a novelty affair that could carry a smash
chart standing- well into the coming
year. Built somewhat along the lines of “Purple People Eater”, the
affair involves an encounter between
an earthman and a female creature from outer space, who asks the fella
to marry her. Besides the gal’s
speed-up voice, the dame has four arms (“the better to hold you”), three
lips (“the better to kiss you”)
and three eyes (“all the better to see”). The Big Bad Wolf-like dialogue
is the gimmick that’s going win
many a disk purchaser over. A novelty that may be #1 on the charts in
short order. On the bottom-half,
Turner romps to a fast, rockabilly-flavored beat number. Upper cut is
the track with the chart look. Top
deck could be a smash kiddie item too.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JIVE TONES (APT 25020)

“DING DING DONG” (2:08) [Pamco BMI — Price]
The Jive Tones swing up a storm with their gimmicks as they belt out a
torrid rock and roller tailor-made
for the teenagers’ dancing tastes. Everyone in this group works.

“GERALDINE” (2:13) [Pamco BMI—Price]
More gimmick filled jump beat vocalizing by the swinging group. Good
name tune the kids may pick up.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CHARGERS (RCA Victor 7417)

“HERE IN MY HEART” (2:20) [Michele BMI—Belvin, Belvin]
A pretty rock-a-ballad (not to be confused with the Al Martino hit) is
emotionally chanted in good rock and
roll style by the Charges. Good teen fare.

“THE COUNTERFEITER” (2:17) [Michele BMI — Jesse]
An R & R novelty about the fast way to get money, counterfeiting. Side
has a good R & B sound and could
do well in that market as well as in pop.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Cash Box Award o’ the Week

RAMSEY LEWIS TRIO (Argo 5322)

“DELILAH” (2:45) [Chappel & Co. ASCAP—V. Young]
“IRACY BLUES” (2:07) [Iracv BMI—B. Young]

The Ramsey Lewis Trio, having found chart success with a chick named
“Carmen” turn their attentions
this time towards another famous gal, “Delilah”. The tune, from the
Victor Young scored “Samson And
Delilah” flick is treated to the exciting jazz interpolations of the
Lewis combo. Flipside, the piano-bass-
drum trio smartly works over a fetching newie tagged “Iracy Blues”. Top
end is included in the new Lewis
LP. Jazz jocks are gonna flip over both halves.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON (Checker 910)

“DISSATISFIED” [Arc BMI—Williamson]
“CROSS MY HEART” [Arc BMI—Williamson]

Sonny Boy Williamson leans into two down home items that have what it
takes to make the southern
territorial wax buyer sit up and take notice. One side, “Dissatisfied”,
is a middle beat rhythm blues that
Sonny Boy wails in convincing manner, giving the tune the little extra
it needs to kick off. “Cross My Heart” is another strong blues opus that
moves along at a slow pace. Real effective funky blues backdrop on both
lids.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TINY TIM & THE HITS (Roulette 4123)

“WEDDING BELLS” (2:23) [Star-Shun BMI—Wilson, Collier, Price, Smith,
Brown]
“DOLL BABY” (2:06) [Kahl, Star-Shun BMI—Wilson, Collier, Price, Smith,
Brown]

Roulette could have a ‘sales blockbuster’ with this entry by Tiny Tim
and the Hits. The tune, tagged
“Wedding Bells”, is a captivating rock-a-ballad chock full of
ultra-commercial vocal and instrumental
sounds. Group’s approach brings to mind the Frankie Lymon-Teenagers
offerings. The under biscuit
“Doll Baby”, is a pile-driving romantic novelty that the outfit belts
out in trigger-quick fashion.

both sides -

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ARTHUR GUNTER (Excello 2147)

“CRAZY ME” (2:42) [Excellorec BMI—Young]
“DON’T LEAVE ME NOW” (2:28) [Excellorec BMI—Young]

Arthur Gunter is back on the wax scene with an Excello pairing that
could be Arthur’s best selling disk
in some time. The artist lends his distinctive touch to a steady beat
blueser tagged “Crazy Me” and the
end result is a platter that Gunter’s large southern following’s gonna
grab off real quick. “Don’t Leave Me
Now” is a thumping romantic pleader that Arthur also knocks out in
winning style. Sock instrumental work
on two attention getters.

(Baby Let's Play House -
part 4)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EARL GAINES (Champion 1001

“NOW DO YOU HEAR” (2:10) Bt [Babb BMI — Hardison, Jarrett]
With Jimmy Beck’s ork supplying the torrid, instrumental background Earl
Gaines proceeds to wrap
the vocal segment in admirable fashion. It’s a romantic blues sizzler
that the artist pounds out with
solid sales authority.

“BEST OF LUCK, BABY” (2:25) [Babb BMI — Bubis]
Another good blues performance is turned in by Earl and the Beck crew on
this rhythmic coupler.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROSCOE SHELTON (Excello 2146)

“CRAZY OVER YOU” (2:30)[Excellorec BMI—Shelton, Hall]
Roscoe Shelton makes a strong pitch for r&b chart honors with his
polished wailing of this slow,
steady rhythm ballad. Passionate, emotional reading that should grab off
a large hunk of airplay.

“SOMETHING’S WRONG” (2:13) [Excellorec BMI—Shelton, Hall]
The gal’s giving Roscoe the fits on another slow, driving rhythmic af-
fair that Shelton approaches
with great feeling. Both lids are rounded out in slick instrumental
style.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LITTLE MILTON (Bobbin 101)

“THAT WILL NEVER DO” (2:44) [Lyco BMI — Campbell, Lyons]
Little Milton squeezes out a convincing reading on a quick moving blues
shuffler. Deck is a down home item
but could make an impressionon the Northern marts as well.

“I’M A LONELY MAN” (2:58) [Lyco BMI — Campbell, Lyons, Milton]
Milton decks out another from the romantic weeper school. Lid also moves
at a quick, rhythmic-blues clip.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CARAVANS (Gospel 1009)

“I’M NOT TIRED YET” [Planemar BMI—Andrews]
The front and center femme voice for the Caravans nobly carries the
Gospel banneras she and the
group dish up a soul-stirring performance on a high-speed offering. Top
flight instrumentation.Tre-
mendous potential in the field.

“I’M WILLING” [Volunteer BMI-—Andrews]
This end the group does a complete about face as it wrings every ounce
of emotion from a fervent,
slow moving entry. Potent stuff.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PROF. HAROLD BOGGS (Nashboro 631)

“HOLD ON TO WHAT YOU GOT” (2:26) [Excellorec BMI—Boggs]
There’s an engaging bit of choral and instrumental work on this driving
spiritual that spotlights the
grade “A” talents of Prof. Harold Boggs.

“LORD GIVE ME STRENGTH” (2:38) [Excellorec BMI—Boggs]
Boggs’ impassioned plea comes across with telling effect on this slow
rhythm coupler. Lotsa action
likely on both portions.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALEX BRADFORD (Specialty 910)

“I’VE GOT A JOB” (2:40) [Pathway BMI—Bradford]
Alex Bradford and chorus are at their gospel best on this sparkling hand
clapper. Sensational, rafter-shakin’ instrumental support for Bradford’s
electrifying vocalsthencis. Can’t miss making the gospel grade.

“HE’S EVERYTHING TO ME” (3:20) [Pathway BMI — Bradford] T
his half is a beautiful filter that Bradford renders with moving
sincerity. Fine coupler but we have to lean to
the top half.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CASH BOX BULLSEYE

JOHNNY HORTON (Columbia 41308)

“WHISPERING PINES” (2:52) [Buna BMI—Halsey]
“WHEN IT’S SPRINGTIME IN ALASKA (It’s Forty Below)” (2:34) [Cajun
BMI—Franks]

There’s plenty of chart potential packed into both ends of Johnny
Horton’s latest Columbia twosome.
The chanter, currently flying high with “All Grown Up”, displays his
stand out vocal qualities on “Whis-
pering Pines” and “When It’s Springtime In Alaska (It’s Forty Below)”.
On the former Horton tenderly
caresses a tear-compelling, sentimental love lilter. On the latter, a
moderate paced affair, he unfortu-
nately gets involved with a gal singer and her boyfriend. Real effective
vocal and instrumental assist
on two grade “A” sides. Take your pick.
