1. REBEL ‘ROUSER, Duane Eddy
Here's where "Rebel Rouser" sits in my 1958 Top 10 instrumentals

1. REBEL-‘ROUSER – DUANE EDDY
2. RUMBLE – LINK WRAY & HIS RAYMEN
3. TEQUILA – THE CHAMPS
4. CANNON BALL – DUANE EDDY
5. GUITAR BOOGIE SHUFFLE – THE VIRTUES
6. MANHATTAN SPIRITUAL – REG OWEN
7. RAMROD – DUANE EDDY
8. MOOVIN’ AND GROOVIN’ – DUANE EDDY
9. THUNDERBIRD – SONNY BURGESS
10. PETER GUNN – HENRY MANCINI

2. SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL, Bill Haley & His Comets
Perhaps the GREATEST cover version of all time?? Certainly the only
cover I can think of where both original version AND cover both rate a
10!! No,strike that one---where the original merits an 11 if that is
possible :)
Post by Dean
3. BO DIDDLEY, Bo Diddley
One of the greatest contenders for best ever debut single
Post by Dean
10. LONESOME TRAIN, The Johnny Brunette Trio
Here's the Trio "performing" this one in the "Rock,Rock,Rock!" movie

12. DREAM LOVER, Bobby Darin
A #1 record over here in UK and one of his best IMO.Always a big fave of
mine
Post by Dean
15. SORRY (I Ran All the Way Home), The Impalas
Think I still have a copy of the original as simply "I Ran All The Way
Home"
Post by Dean
19. LIPSTICK ON YOUR COLLAR, Connie Francis
One of the best guitar breaks on ANY record courtesy Mr George Barnes
Post by Dean
22. HOUND DOG, Elvis Presley
Unbelievably kept off the #1 spot on the NME chart here by Frankie Laine
and "A Woman In Love" the turgid tune from the big "Guys And Dolls"
movie
Post by Dean
25. CRYING IN THE RAIN, The Everly Brothers
The Everly Brothers on one of Carole King's best songs. A marriage made
in heaven!!
Post by Dean
28. OUT OF LIMITS, The Marketts
Original copies of this titled as "Outer Limits" as per the sci-fi TV
show
Post by Dean
31. GO WILD LITTLE SADIE, Jack Scott
For a long time this was the hardest to find of the later Jack Scott
records
until somebody booted it in the 70's
Post by Dean
33. IT’S GONNA WORK OUT FINE, Ike & Tina Turner
Originally recorded in 1960 by Mickey & Sylvia

The YT poster sounds like a nice enough guy. You'd like him
Post by Dean
35. LAVENDER BLUE, Sammy Turner
Never understood the appeal of this one nor its high chart placing.I
really
disliked it
Post by Dean
42. RED HOT, Billy Lee Riley
Best ever version of the original Billy "The Kid" Emerson song
Post by Dean
45. A TEENAGER IN LOVE, Dion & The Belmonts
Most of the sales over here were siphoned off by an inferior Marty Wilde
cover

As if that wasn't bad enough Marty proceeded to do EXACTLY the same
thing again to them with his "No One Knows"
Post by Dean
46. POOR LITTLE FOOL, Ricky Nelson
Ricky's first really big hit here in UK--#4 in NME in October 1958 but
wasn't his biggest here--that was "Hello Mary Lou" #3 in July 1961

Not sure that it's truly a cover as it did not chart until over 3 months
after the Turner version charted. Actually, there are a few that I rate
higher if these are classified as covers:

Slippin' And Slidin' - Little Richard
Move Baby Move - Larry Harrison
Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On - Roy Hall

And I also have "All Shook Up" by Elvis one notch below Haley's record.
Do you consider all 4 of the aforementioned to be covers?

The easy winner if you consider a "single" to be the 2 sides included.

It's not really "later," but I guess you said that because of the 2 ABC
singles.

You've got the chronology backwards. "No One Knows" came first although
neither version charted over there.

45. A TEENAGER IN LOVE, Dion & The Belmonts

In reality a superior cover in the minds of most Brit teens...

It's understandable that a 13 year-old with a black mindset might
prefer Frankie's version in 1959, and/or later when they are a joyful
79 in 2025.

Who's Frankie?

And I cared not one single jot what was in the minds of most Brit teens
in 1959 and care just as little what is in those same people minds now
