Media here today reporting that veteran British tradional jazz
bandleader Chris Barber has died

Rising to fame in the 1950';s his early band included one Lonnie
Donegan as banjoist who contributed "Rock Island Line" to the band's
first LP "New Orleans Joys" in 1954. Released later as a Decca single
the number started the skiffle craze here in the UK and launched
Donegan on a lengthy hit-filled career. The number also charted high
on the US charts.

Barber himself scored a massive hit a few years later when a revival
of Sidney Bechet's "Petite Fleur"---a vehicle for band clarinetist
Monty Sunshine---scored high on both the UK and US charts in 1959

Barber was 91 and had suffered from dementia in recent years

One of my favorite discoveries searching for 1955 obscurities.

Didn't nominate it because I didn't think the Dixieland jazz or Chris' vocal abilities would impress. To me it's infectious. Chris and Lonnie on banjo just seem to be having a lot of fun.

My tastes are far more cosmopolitan than yours!
Taking my cue from Carl, next month I'm going to nominate a bunch of
outliers, records I like a lot but which are way out of the mainstream here.
