THE CASH BOX DISK OF THE WEEK

ELVIS PRESLEY (RCA Victor 20/47-6643)

"LOVE ME TENDER” [Elvis Presley BMI—Presley, Matson]
“ANYWAY YOU WANT ME” (2:12) [Ross Jungnickel ASCAP—Schroeder, Owens]

The fantastic Mr. Presley, who has shattered all sorts of record
industry statistics, has set an unbelievable new goal for future stars
to shoot at. His latest recording “Love Me Tender” is reported to have
already topped the million mark in orders, and the record is just now
being released. The young sensation introduced “Love Me Tender” (title
tune of his first film) on the Ed Sullivan Show just a few weeks ago,
and ever since that date, dealers, ops and jockeys have been clamoring
for the waxing. If the number is starting out at the million mark, what
will its total sale be ? The song is Presley’s first ballad effort for
Victor; a stirring love song emotionally chanted. Imagine how many coins
this will attract into the boxes. But don’t sell the other side short.
“Anyway You Want Me” is a strong side in its own right—and it’s got a
great beat. Presley is currently jamming the #1 and #2 spots with “Don’t
Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog.” The next few days may find history repeating
itself with this latest Presley twosome.

A rocket ship’s take-off introduces this hilarious new Nervous Norvus
ditty that should appeal to the many
fans who welcomed “Transfusion.” Lots of funny lines delivered in the
hipster’s amusing manner.



“THE BULLFROG HOP” (1:50) [Paul Barrett BMI—Drake]
Another colorful novelty about a new dance that Norvus has discovered.

“WILL YOU REMEMBER” B (2:48) [Ward BMI—Ward]
With their rendition of “St. Therese of the Roses” riding high on the
charts, Billy Ward and his Dominoes
issue a powerful new side set to the rock and roll beat. Tearful
romancer that the teenagers will enjoy.

“COME ON, SNAKE, LET’S CRAWL” (2:30) [Ward BMI—Ward]
The crew swings thru a solid up-beat, rocker that’ll have the kids
hopping. Catchy dance ditty.

THE CASH BOX AWARD O' THE WEEK

THE DELLS (Vee-Jay 204)

“OH WHAT A NITE” (2:50) [Conrad BMI—Junior, Funches]
“JO JO” (2:57) [Conrad BMI—Twiggs, Carter]

The Dells wail a rhythmic, infectious ballad, “Oh What A Nite”, in a
manner that labels the offering “hit”.
It is a powerfully performed item, sprinkled with a number of vocal
gimmicks, and the end result will be
one of important impact on the best selling lists. Of that we are
certain. The deck is already making noise
in several areas and bears very close watching. The flip, “Jo Jo”, is a
happy quick beat rocker with vivacity and great appeal. It is a good
deck that is sure to get lots of plays, but we lean to “Oh What A Nite”.
Two good sides performed by a very promising group.

JOHNNY BRAGG and THE MARIGOLDS (Excello 2091)

“IT’S YOU DARLING IT’S YOU” (2:36) [Excellorec BMI—Bragg, Riley, Hayes]
“JUKE BOX ROCK AND ROLL” (2:36) [Excellorec BMI—Bragg, Riley]

Johnny Bragg and The Marigolds pair a couple of exceptionally strong
sides, “It’s You Darling It’s You”
and “Juke Box Rock And Roll”. The “It’s You Darling” etching is a soft,
slow ,paced ballad lovely that
Bragg projects beautifully. A tender love song given a moving
performance. The flip, “Juke Box Rock
And Roll”, is a complete change of pace. Bragg and The Marigolds rock a
quick beat jumper with the
sound and feeling that has the kids crazy today. Exciter with the beat
demanded. Very good deck, but
we’ll take a chance on “It’s You Darling It’s You”.

THE EL VENOS (Groove 4G-0170)

“NOW WE’RE TOGETHER” (2:12) [Pollard Music BMI—Leon Daniels]
The El Venos, a group of Pittsburgh youngsters, blend smartly and with a
teenage sound, on a lilting
quick beat bouncer. Deck has an appealing charm that makes it one to
watch. Like it.

“GERALDINE” (2:08) [Armond BMI—Leon Daniels]
Swingy platter that is engaging, but not as attractive commercially as
“Now We’re Together”.

LUTHER BOND AND THE EMERALDS (Federal 12279)

“HE LOVES YOU BABY” (2:39) [Armo BMI—LeRoy Bond]
Bond and the group sing with the assistance of an echo chamber on this
unusual deck. It is a slow beat
blues with wailing that the echo gives an unreal sound. Deck bears
watching.



“I CRY” (2:17) [Armo BMI—Bond, Trice]
Luther Bond and The Emeralds blend softly on a slow, drifting blues
ballad. Bond and the group have an
appealing sound. Warm offering.

SHAKEY HORTON (Cobra 5002)

“NEED MY BABY” (2:15) [Armel BMI — Bedno]
Shakey Horton swings a slow beat rhythm blues, telling the story of his
love for his baby. It is a strong
offering with a catchy melody, treatment and beat. Good side.



“HAVE A GOOD TIME” (2:15) [Armel BMI — Bedno]
Horton backs with a southern flavored middle beat rocker. It is a
driving offering the kids can jump to.

LARRY BIRDSONG (Calvert 104)

“TELL ME THE TRUTH” (2:45) [Babbs BMI—Jarrett]
Birdsong sings a slow beat love item that is infectious, moving, and
exciting. The chanter’s treatment
is very strong on a strong hunk o’ material. Watch it.



“THREE TIMES SEVEN” (2:48) [Babbs BMI—Jarrett]
Larry Birdsong warns his “baby” that she’ll see her mistake some day.
It’s a slow blues performed by
Birdsong with an ease and clarity that makes good listening.

THE PHARAOHS (Class 202)

“WATUSI” (:35) [Recordo Music BMI—Jim Thomas]
This is a follow up to “Stranded In The Jungle” and follows the pattern
very closely. It is filled with jungle sounds and drum beats. An exciter
the kids should go for.



“TEENAGERS LOVE SONG” (2:35) [Recordo Music BMI Richard Berry]
The Pharaohs dish up a rhythmic bouncer with an unusual vocal sound that
will grab attention. It’s strictly
for the teen age diet.

THE LANES (Gee 1023)

“OPEN UP YOUR HEART” (2:41) [Planetary Music ASCAP —Schroeder, Weisman]
The Lanes have a powerful piece of material here as they rock a quick
beat flavorsome item with polish
and skill. The deck rides along creating an exciting atmosphere. Platter
is strong bow for the Lanes and
should go a long way towards building them as a record name.



“YOU ALONE”
The Lanes back with a dramatic love item, deftly handled and aimed at
the pop market. Strong lead and
good group support help make a good coupler. However, the stronger deck
seems to be “Open Up Your
Heart”.

JAMES CARTER (Tuxedo 917)

“I’M FALLING FOR YOU” (2:50) [Pickwick ASCAP—Trafalger, Williams,
Sanders]
Carter sings a slow paced ballad with an earnest and moving vocal. His
vocal reading is one to be
praised highly. Good deck that demands exposure.

“WILD HOG” (2:30) [Ford BMI —Garson, Braithwaite, Carter]
James Carter sings an infectious middle beat rocker with a feeling
filled vocal. Good deck that moves.

JOE MEDLIN (King 4970)

“LORD KNOWS I TRIED” (2:51) [Jay & Cee BMI — Millinder, Glover]
Joe Medlin sings a pretty floaty ballad. He does an excellent job of
selling the melodic charmer
and the deck comes off well.



“AFTER ALL I’VE BEEN TO YOU” (2:11) [Stasney ASCAP —O’Flynn, Redmond,
David]
Another pop pretty done softly and in the Medlin manner.

THE GUM DROPS (King 4963)

“NATURAL BORN LOVER” (2:30) [Jay & Cee BMI—Billy Dawn Smith]
The Gum Drops collaborate on a rhythmic blues bouncer with a deep mood
feeling. Lead handles the item well and the deck is strong.



“CHAPEL OF HEARTS” (2:26) [Jay & Cee BMI—Smith, Miller]
The Gum Drops offer a tender floaty ballad with a romantic lyric. It is
softly presented and comes off a moving wax.

PIANO RED (Groove 4G-0169)

“YOU WERE MINE FOR A WHILE” (2:08) [Trinity BMI—Hicks, Freeman]
Piano Red sings with a more pop feeling than we’ve ever heard him
attempt before as he delivers a slow
beat rhythmic ditty. Red is backed with a chorus and it is certainly a
new Red we hear.



“WOO-EE” (2:00) [Hill & Range BMI—Willie Perryman]
Red’s his ole self again on this side as he rocks a middle beat rhythm
piece with a solid and exciting beat. Red’s driving piano pounding and
rocking chant will please his followers.

AHMAD JAMAL (Parrot 818)

“IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU” (2:35) [Van Heusen-Burke]
Ahmad Jamal flits over the keys in spright fashion as he plays the
lovely tune. It is an instrumental soft lights item that makes excellent
listening, good background music.

‘‘EXCERPTS FROM THE BLUES” (2:40) [Frederick BMI —Jamal]
Similarly patterned instrumental in which a very commercial piano is
highlighted. Two easy to listen to decks.

R&B SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

FRANKIE MARSHALL (Atco 6076)

“EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY” (2:09) [Tiger BMI—Leiber, Stoller]
“OVER AND OVER” (2:13) [Tiger BMI—Leiber, Stoller]

Frankie Marshall has a hot piece of property in “Every Minute of the
Day”. The talented youngster swings
into the rhythmic and catchy melody with a powerful vocal aided no end
by a tricky and engaging arrange-
ment. This side has all the attributes to make Frankie the star he’s
always promised to be. Watch it carefully. The flip, “Over and Over”, is
a slow beat blues that comes off another captivating side. Marshall
sings the delightful blues with a simple charm and it will offer strong
competition to “Every Minute”. Two excellent sides with just a shade
favoring “Every Minute Of The Day”.

SIL AUSTIN (Mercury 70963)

“SLOW WALK” (2:36) [Norbay BMI]
“WILDWOOD” (2:32) [Norbay BMI]

Sil Austin has a pair of torrid instrumental items that look like they
can well follow in the footsteps of the current instrumental national
pop and r & b hit, “Honky Tonk.” The items have the same excitement,
flavor and top notch quality. “Slow Walk” is a slow paced mood blues
with a handclap ping gimmick that continues steadily throughout the
record. It features a scorching horn job. The coupling, “Wildwood,” is
more wild horn and handclapping set to a middle rhythmic beat. The beat
excites and the standout horn work raises the hackles. Two tremendous
sides.

ROY MONTRELL (Specialty 583)

“THAT MELLOW SAXOPHONE” [Venice BMI—Montrell, Marasealeo, Sandy]
“OOOH-WOW” (2:28) [Venice BMI—Montrell]

Roy Montrell and his aggregation comes up with an exciting side that
should bring plenty of attention
to the group and perhaps take off into the big sales category. “That
Mellow Saxophone” is a rocking
wild novelty that Montrell belts in aggressive fashion. Featuring a
pulsating beat, excellent instrumental
reading, and a captivating gravelly vocal, the deck could be a real
sleeper. Keep close tabs on it. The flip, “Oooh-Wow”, is a similar piece
of material—a quick beat jump ditty, but not of the same outstanding
quality. It’s “That Mellow Saxophone”.

JOE JONES (Herald 488)

“YOU DONE ME WRONG” ( 2:23) [Angel BMI—Jones, Palmer]
Joe Jones makes his bow on Herald with a lilting middle beat ditty that
he handles in good style. Jones
has that southern flavor as he rocks gently and the deck could command
lot of attention. Watch this
one carefully—it could take off.



“WHEN YOUR HAIR HAS TURNED TO SILVER” (2:23) [Wm. H. Morris
ASCAP—Tobias, DeRose]
Joe Jones does a pleasant side with the rhythmic oldie, but he doesn’t
have the same true feeling that
is captured on “You Done Me Wrong”. Good but not as strong.

GENE VINCENT (Capitol 3558; F3558)

“BLUE JEAN BOP” (2:20) [Ardmore Vincent, Levy]
“WHO SLAPPED JOHN” (1:56) [Central BMI—Vincent, T. Davis]

A new Gene Vincent biscuit hits the wax market this week and it appears
as tho the “Be-Bop-ALula”
kid and his Blue Caps are gonna have another big countrypop hit on their
hands. On the top end the
songster drives through the exciting title song of his first Capitol LP.
Tagged “Blue Jean Bop”, it’s a
swinging side delivered in the very commercial ‘rockabilly’ fashion.
“Who Slapped John”, on the flip
portion, receives another spirited Vincent reading of a trigger-fast,
gimmicked-up novelty jumper
replete with echo and guitar work. It’s a wild side tailor- made for the
teensters. Slight edge to the
top half.

ROY HALL (Decca 30050, 9-30050)

“THREE ALLEY CATS” (2:26) [Copar BMI—J. Rule, R. Hall]
Here’s a great country-pop rock ’n roller featuring a sparkling vocal
effort by Roy Hall on a deck that could zoom way up into the big hit
category. Sensational instrumental support.



“DIGGIN’ THE BOOGIE” (2:33) [Old Charter BMI—R. Hall]
Similar comments on another lid loaded with smash potential. Hall could
have his first big one with either
end of the release.

MAC CURTIS (King 4965; 45-4965)

“THE LOW ROAD” (2:12) [Armo BMI—Shell, Price]
Mac Curtis has the material, instrumental support and ultra-commercial
gimmicked-up vocal style to go
all the way with this one. It’s a haunting, tear-compelling, slow
finger-snapper with an intriguing whistle
in the background. Could bust wide open.



“YOU AIN’T TREATIN’ ME RIGHT” (2:06) [Armo BMI—D. Johnson]
Here Curtis ups the tempo as he turns in another splendid vocal effort
on a rhythmic, rock ’n roll-flavored
blues item. Stellar two-sider.

JIMMY AND JOHNNY (Decca 30061; 9-30061)

“SWEET LOVE ON MY MIND” ( 2:11 ) [Cedarwood BMI — W. Walker]
Jimmy and Johnny come up a striking performance as they wend their way
through a fast paced country
rocker. It’s an engaging ditty grooved in the popular rockabilly fashion
and has what it takes to step way
out.



"IMAGINATION” (2:15) [Cedarwood BMI—W. Pierce, L. Boggefct]
This end the boys tenderly spin a moderate paced romantic piece with
heart rending lyrics. Two good coin
catchers.
