THE CASH BOX DISK OF THE WEEK
LES PAUL & MARY FORD (Capitol 2123; F-2123)
“IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME” (2:06)
"SMOKE RINGS” (2:54)
The seemingly never ending assembly line of hit tunes manufactured by
Les Paul and Mary Ford runs into high gear again as they dish up their
stylized version of a great oldie entitled “In The Good Old Summertime.”
The beautiful manner in which Mary harmonizes with herself and the fleet
fingered guitaring captivatingly administered by Les is sure to send the
number high up on the lists. This fast moving side really makes you
jump. Flip is a slow soft inviting number which shows the versatility
that the stars have. Done in the pleasing multiple voice fashion once
more with the pleasurable strumming of Les as he provides the backing
for his wife, the disk makes for smooth listening. The top is the side
we’re thrilled with and we expect it to break fast and right for the top
where it should stay for quite a while.

VARETTA DILLARD (Savoy 851)
“HERE IN MY HEART” ((2:41)
“I’M YOURS” (2:43)
Varetta Dillard takes the current hit sensation “Here In My Heart” and
treats it to a slightly faster beat than that of the other renditions of
this number. Varetta delivers the song with a light bounce and gives out
with a big voice as she renders a fine reading of the sentimental
lyrics. The result is a dramatic side excitingly waxed, and one that
should fill the tills. The under siding is an equally fine rendition of
another pop hit “I’m Yours” done with an r & b arrangement. The coverage
is presented with a slight jump.

WINI BROWN (Mercury 9167)
“HERE IN MY HEART” (2:39)
“YOUR HAPPINESS IS MINE” (2:35)
Wini Brown comes up with a r & b treatment of the current pop ballad
that has skyrocketed to the top of the best sellers in one short month.
On the upper lid, Wini sings “Here In My Heart” in slow tempo
arrangement that gives the sultry voiced artist a chance to display her
vast talents. Wini’s smooth vocalizing of the exciting tune is rendered
with warmth and feeling. The thrush’s personality projects forcefully as
she turns in one of her finest performances. The Boy Friends provide the
strongest part of the support.

THE GUY BROTHERS (States 101)
“MARIE” (2:37)
The Guy Brothers and ork belt out a fast moving- oldie with enthusiasm.
Browley Guy handles the lead vocal dynamically as he dishes up the big
bounce tune. The orking helps the boys bring in a solid deck.
“I LIKE BARBEQUE” (2:53)
A happy novelty is harmonized by the brothers who bounce through the
driving number.

“KEEP YOUR NOSE OUT OF MY BUSINESS” (2:59)
Calvin Boze and his all stars come up with a moderate beat bounce with
cute lyrics. Chorus chanting and strong orking back the singer.
“GOOD TIME SUE” (2:28)
Flip is a live jump tune that Boze and his group go all out on. The
orking is hot in the breaks.

LIL MISS CORNSHUCKS (Coral 65090; 9-65090)
“DON’T MARRY TOO SOON” (2:21)
Lil Miss Cornshucks pipes a slow soft ballad with sad lyrics
feelingfully. Musical backdrop is easy and subdued.
“TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS” (3:04)
The slow oldie is given an r & b treatment by the talented thrush. Miss
Cornshucks sings the sentimental lyrics with ease and warmth.

EARL FOREST (Duke 103)
“BABY, BABY” (2:45)
Earl Forest and The Beale Streeters dish out a moderate beat jump number
with a low down arrangement. Forest on the vocal turns in a top flight
effort.
“ROCK THE BOTTLE” (2:35)
The undersiding is a quick tempo bounce that Forest chants expressively.
Ork backs the singer with a deft handling of an exciting arrangement
that features some solid saxing.

THE BLENDERS (Decca 28241; 9-28241)
“NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS” (2:48)
The Blenders beat out a moderate tempo oldie with feeling. The lead
vocal does a grand job and is backed smoothly by the group.
“MEMORIES OF YOU” (2:59)
Flip side is a slow mellow item that the Blenders handle with ease. The
polished harmony of the group sets up a subdued backing for the top
flight chanting of the lead.

LITTLE DONNA HIGHTOWER (Decca 28233; 9-28233)
“KISS ME BABY” (2:43)
Little Donna Hightower drives out a moderate bounce item with zest and
with a projection of personality that sends the lid soaring. Good
orking, featuring some slick saxing, sets the artist up in strong style.
“DON’T YOU THINK I OUGHT TO KNOW” (2:55)
The under portion is another rhythmic number that Little Donna socks out
expressively for another strong end.

THE BLUES CARAVAN (Coral 65091; 9-65091)
“BEGIN THE BEGUINE” (2:41)
The Blues Caravan wax an instrumental version of the Cole Porter
favorite. The lilting melody is done with a rhythm and blues arrangement
that spots Jay Jay on the sax.
“BEDTIME BLUES” (2:35)
The Caravan dishes up a slow blues in soft manner as again the treatment
features Jay and his stylish horn blowing.

SLEEPER OF THE WEEK
FLOYD WILLIAMS (Rainbow 301)
“CREEPIN’ IN” (2:41)
“JAMBO JUMP” (2:39)
Floyd Williams displays his masterful horn blowing in this slow soft
bounce item that he must have written with his alto sax in mind. Titled
“Creepin’ In,” the top deck is a waxing of a mellow piece that becomes
slightly more emphatic in tone and presentation as the boys get into the
number. Williams’ thrilling run make this a level that will get plenty
of attention. The band sets up a musical assist that enhances the
saxist’s solo, and the arrangement spots the pianist who gets off some
sparkling chord sweeping to round out a sock dish. The lower end is a
change of pace item. The boys cover a fast tempo jump with much gusto,
as once again, Williams treats the listener to some top-flight and
exciting saxing. Ops can’t miss with this disk.

TITUS TURNER (Okeh 6883)
“GOT SO MUCH TROUBLE” (2:40)
A slow blues piece is given a strong clear reading by Titus Turner who
chants the sad lyrics in low down style.
“WHAT’CHA GONNA DO FOR ME” (2:17)
Flip is a quick beat tune that showcases Turner’s big voice. A solid
musical backdrop is set up for the artist.

MELVIN SMITH (RCA Victor 20-4735; 47-4735)
“LOOPED” (2:26)
Melvin Smith sings a moderate tempo with a slightly quickened pace.
Smith’s vocal tricks help make this rhythmic tune a strong possibility.

The lower lid is a slow beat that is given a low down treatment by the
vocalist. The orking is good and creates an effect of swaying rhythm.

“HOLD ME, KISS ME, SQUEEZE ME” (2:35)
A slow sentimental ballad is softly delivered by the tenor voiced Melvin
Moore. The haunting melody comes off well.
“POSSESSED” (3:20)
Flip is another slow romantic ballad that the singer handles easily.
Soft orchestral backing helps make this a strong dish.

HANK SNOW (RCA Victor 20-4733; 47-4733)
“LADY’S MAN” (2:40)
“MARRIED BY THE BIBLE, DIVORCED BY THE LAW” (2:35)
Hank Snow, whose every release is an occasion for ops to open their ears
and listen, has come through with another winner that will be a fit
companion piece for his current hit “Gold Rush Is Over”. Hank warbles a
fast moving item on the upper lid, titled, “Lady’s Man”. His happy
delivery of the sock lyrics is done in country style and is rendered in
his smooth and off hand manner of presentation that makes it a warming
and pleasing side. This is a half that will receive plenty of action and
ops should lose no time in getting it to work for them. Flip is a change
of pace item. Snow chants the slow ballad with ease and warmth and is
supported capably by the string band. This deck could also catch coins,
but the tune on the upper deck is the big one.

Kitty Wells sells a cute set of lyrics set to moderate beat in an
engaging manner. The vocalist is supported by a string band.
“IT WASN’T GOD WHO MADE HONKY TONK ANGELS” (2:27)
Thrush sings a slow country weeper with warmth.
