It may not have much push with the 30 or so people participating here
and may get soundly trounced in the voting, but I always liked this
song very much, and as a folk song, I think it is first rate. The
Highwaymen here, sound even less commercial than many of the other
groups of the day, especially the Kingston Trio. You might have to
have a heart for folk music in a very across the board way, and not in
an incidental or pick and choose kind of way.

Listen to the whole song if you want (cost = zero); 1 click to play:

In checking the track listing of a box set I just ordered to see if it was
there, I discovered that the tracks in each of four two disc sets are listed
alphabetically by title! This is a first in my experience.

Anyway, it's not on the set. I ordered it because I have almost no Folk in

I think we had a discussion or two about Dock of the Bay over on the 60's
group some time ago; some people don't even consider it a soul song. OTOH,
a lot of people wouldn't consider it folk because, after all, it is Otis
Redding singing the song so it must categorically be a soul record. I would
call it folk-soul, for lack of a better single category. Patches by
Clarence Carter would probably fall into the same category as well as some
of the stuff that Taj Mahal recorded, although he ventures much more into
either straight folk and folk-blues category than soul.

I'd rate the following from good to excellent. Very few of them are
actually folk performances. There are other good songs on the list,
but, IMO, in the wrong versions. (If you want Dylan songs, I think you
should mostly listen to Dylan sing them.) Anyway, be careful playing
this stuff. It may be detrimental to your political leanings. :-)

From a poor memory it's a Mike Nesmith composition and a fave rave of
mine.

The b-side of the 45 has always reminded me of Nan Mouskouri.(sp).
