Here's the original (real) Calypso by the writer, Lord Melody:

I saw him on my honeymoon in either the Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico (think
it was the former) and he of course sang this. The original title was
apparently "Booboo Man."

Here's an interesting article on Belafonte's role in Calypso:

http://www.blackstarnews.com/others/extras/the-real-calypso-kings.html

I guess those who said he's not real Calypso were correct.

Here's a movie review for "Calypso Dreams":

http://caribbean-beat.com/issue-76/sweet-calypso-dreams#axzz3mfVvS9CY

I can't find it on Netflix or Amazon and it would cost $45 to order. That
requires some deliberation.

Here's a couple of other versions of the song from 1957

The Calypso Carnival featuring King Flash version

and of course the inevitable Robert Mitchum :)

There were at least a couple of others from that year but I never
heard the Morty Franklin or Steve Karmen versions

I'd class this more as rock 'n' roll albeit rather lame rock 'n' roll
I never liked the song much but Gracie's record does have a pop
dimension to it.

So what about the better and punchier "Fabulous"? .

Because of how it sounds.

From Wiki:
After the change in musical tastes during the late 1950s, Cole's ballad singing did not sell well with younger listeners, despite a successful stab at rock n' roll with "Send For Me" (peaked at #6 pop).

I definitely don't hear it as rock 'n' roll.

It's bluesy yes but not markedly so IMO and still fits comfortably
under the pop umbrella along with other bluesy pop offerings---Kay
Starr's "Fool Fool Fool" for example.

If it was by Little Willie John rather than Nat King Cole you would not be thinking pop at all. It was a #1 R&B chart hit. I don't hear anything at all pop about it.

We are obviously hearing the record differently. The fact that it was
a #1 R&B chart hit has no real bearing on the matter--"Mona :Lisa" was
one too.

I see "Butterfly" as similar to Mitchell's version of "Singing The Blues."

While I see "Fabulous" as more similar to "Don't Be Cruel."

Se what a helpful guy I am? Always ready to help the underdog :-)

I like her r&b version but I like Nat's pop (with r&b overtones)
version better (Julie London's pop version is none too shabby either)
