20 FAVE DUET RECORDS

TODAY........FROM 1960

1. CATHY’S CLOWN – THE EVERLY BROTHERS

One of their very biggest hits self penned by the brothers #1 on both
sides of the pond—and their 1st for Warner Bros (and WB's UK debut)

2. WHEN WILL I BE LOVED – THE EVERLY BROTHERS

Did any act ever leave such a valuable number behind after jumping ship
to another label? #8 US/#5 UK

3. NIGHT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME – RAY CHARLES (MARGIE HENDRIX)

Superb live version of his famous number from 1958 recorded at a concert
in Atlanta Ga in May 1959

4. GEE BABY – JOE & ANN

Irresistible duet from Joe Joseph and Ann Cole recorded for Johnny
Vincent at Ace Records.#14BBr&b

5. A ROCKIN’ GOOD WAY (TO MESS AROUND AND FALL IN LOVE) – DINAH
WASHINGTON & BROOK BENTON

Wonderful revival of the number originally introduced by Priscilla
Bowman (and the Spaniels) in 1958. #7BBpop #1BBr&b

6. YOU’VE GOT THE POWER – JAMES BROWN (BEA FORD)

Nearing the end of his tenure on Federal label here’s a great duet
between Soul Bro #1 and Bea Ford. #86BBpop #14BBr&b

7. BIG TIME SPENDER – CORNBREAD & BISCUITS

Excellent comedic monologue on Maske similar to some humorous Bo Diddley
things. In real life these guys were Hank Gibson & Joe Battles

8. BABY (YOU’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES) – DINAH WASHINGTON & BROOK BENTON

Much superior remake of the Dorothy Pay number from 1958 this was the
first Dinah/Brook collaboration. #5 BBpop #1BBr&b

9. YOU DRINK TOO MUCH BOOZE – JIMMY RANEY & SLIM SLAUGHTER

On Jo-Dee label I was told this was a Pittsburgh Porky Chedwick fave--I
got hooked the first time I ever heard it.

10. PRETTY BABY ROCK – JIM MYERS & TEX REGAN

Strident rockin’ countrified number recorded by the duo on the Fortune
label showing that Devora & co did dabble in other genres

11. SO SAD (TO WATCH GOOD LOVE GO BAD) – THE EVERLY BROTHERS

Don Everly penned this immediate followup weeper to “Cathy’s Clown” on
Warner Bros. #7 BBpop #5 UK

12. BLUES STAY AWAY FROM ME – DORSEY & JOHNNY BURNETTE

1956 track by the Rock ‘N’ Roll Trio revives the Delmore Bros country
classic that got missed for release until this Coral single in 1960

13. YOU’RE THE BOSS – LaVERN BAKER & JIMMY RICKS

Despite what the YT clip says this is from December 1960 great duet by
LaVern & Jimmy later revived by Elvis & Ann-Margret

14. CAUSE I LOVE YOU – CARLA & RUFUS

On the original Satellite label (before it became Stax) a great duet
here from Rufus Thomas and daughter Carla

15. LIKE STRANGERS – THE EVERLY BROTHERS

From the last Cadence recording session in February 1960 this nice
ballad preceded “When Will I Be Loved” in that session

16. LOUISIANA MAN – RUSTY & DOUG

The original version of the country anthem recorded for Hickory. Take no
notice of YT date this was out December 1960

17. SPOONFUL – ETTA & HARVEY

On Chess the good second ever version of “Spoonful” following the great
Howlin’ Wolf original released a few months earlier

18. GONNA WORK OUT FINE – MICKEY & SYLVIA (UNRELEASED)

The original version of the number that (with an “It’s” added) Ike &
Tina Turner will take high in the charts the following year

19, OH LOVER – SHERRI TAYLOR & SINGIN’ SAMMY WARD

I make this decent r&b duet the tenth record released on the then brand
new Motown label

20. STICK WITH ME BABY – THE EVERLY BROTHERS

Yeah I know it’s the flip of “Temptation” in 1961 but it was out first
on the “Date With The Everly Brothers” LP in 1960

BUBBLING UNDER

21. LOVE HURTS – THE EVERLY BROTHERS
22. TWO BIG FEET – HENRY & MAMIE
23. HEAVENLY BABY – ALLEN & ALLEN
24. LIKE YOU USED TO DO – SHIRLEY & LEE
25. ALWAYS IT’S YOU – THE EVERLY BROTHERS

Never heard of this one before, and it wasn't on Rosemont's site, but it
will be soon.

I recently realized this was not released until 1960 and moved it there.

I get it now. The record collector in you likes to use the video that
shows the original 45 even though there may be another one that sounds a
little better.

Another good one I did not have. I know it's a Toussaint thing, but who
is the other Allen?

24. LIKE YOU USED TO DO – SHIRLEY & LEE
I'm gonna keep an MP3, but it's way too produced and with a big
orchestra. Does have a pretty good sax break though.

25. ALWAYS IT’S YOU – THE EVERLY BROTHERS
My first DJ job in 1979 on Wednesdays in a dump called Shortway's
Frankie C. requested this and I told him I didn't have it. He wasn't
happy when he later saw that I did have it. Did not want to play an off
record like this that nobody else in the place would know. Frank was off
Wednesdays at the time but working the other 6 nights at various places.

I don't accept these as bna fide duets since Orbison is out front
singing solo with Joe Melson together with the Anita Kerr Singers
providing the backing (if it was a real duet "Only The Lonely" would top
my list)

That should be "odd record" like this, although it did chart.

Roger is as much of a collector as Frank, yet he vastly prefers the hits
and the classics over most odd records.

Thanks for your subjective opinion, Roger.

Since hearing Johnny & Joe's 1957 version, I've much liked the song
itself (the melody, etc)...

I also enjoy the version by The Orlons (girl group).

And he's featured prominently in their version of "Over The Mountain."
It's not as bad as Billy & Lillie's version. The Orlons do a very good
version of this one:

Not really. If someone were trying to objectively pick the greatest
records of the year, that opinion could be challenged. That's what I
tried to do on my DDD yearly lists, but no 2 people would entirely agree
on any objective list.

What do you mean "not really"??

All individual opinions on here about the quality of records of any kind
are subjective and open to challenge of course they are.

OTOH a statement like "Elvis recorded for RCA" is OBJECTIVE and can't be
challenged

Sorry, but what we see (or hear or taste or smell) is not necessarily
objective. An objective statement is purely factual and provable. Our senses
can give us only subjective info since a) we can't demonstrate that they're
not just particular to ourselves because of brains possibly "sensing" the same
stimulus differently.

So you can't say that a statement is objective until you research
whether or not it's factual and provable?

And this can change over time, like at one time if you said "Pluto is a
planet in our solar system" that would have been factual and provable 50
years ago, but now the scientific community has said that Pluto is not a
planet.

Diane and I often disagree on colors. She'll say something is red and I
will say that it's maroon. We are both being objective, but see it
differently.

Read again. I said that our senses generally aren't reliable when it comes to
objectivity. If one person says it's red and another says it's purple the
argument has to stop since there is no "objective" way for them discover who
it "right." Colors are produced in our brains. What's actually out there are
just light rays with different wavelengths.

And this can change over time, like at one time if you said "Pluto is a
planet in our solar system" that would have been factual and provable 50
years ago, but now the scientific community has said that Pluto is not a
planet.
This is merely a matter of definition being changed by the scentists. Pluto,
and our "objective" ideas about how big it is and what it's orbit is remain
unchanged.

Other objective facts can change every day, for instance the transfer
rate between dollars and English pounds. On a Sunday when markets are
closed it may be a certain number all day, but sure to change by Monday
night, even if only slightly.

Now you've got it. It is an objective fact that time changes things.

Is it an objective fact that Geoff is a white supremacist?

But in reality there is only ONE objective view here.

Your object is either red or maroon

One of you is right and the other needs an optician :)
